3 Reasons Texture Matters When Choosing Carpet for Your Home

Color and texture are significant considerations whenever you’re rethinking interior design. In the world of carpet selections, texture matters because it influences how the carpet looks and feels in the space, the level of wear and tear it can handle, and whether or not the selection suits your lifestyle.

Carpet Texture Considerations: Looks, Durability, and Lifestyle

When you visit us here at Creative Floors or schedule an in-home consult, the design team will learn more about your aesthetic interior design preferences and household lifestyle to ensure your carpet’s texture is the right fit.

This attention to detail ensures your carpets look great year after year while meeting the daily demands. Here are three ways we integrate texture into the carpet selection equation.

1. Aesthetic (Visual) Texture

There are several ways a carpet selections provide aesthetic or visual texture.

The first is the material’s texture, which varies according to the fibers included in the carpet. For example, a natural woven jute carpet or area rug has a different textural appearance than a synthetic carpet or carpets made from wool.

On the other hand, carpets produced with the same type of soft carpet fibers dyed the same color and cut to the same length have a smoother, more unified, or velvety texture. However, these carpet textures are the most likely to show wear and tear or stains, so we keep that in mind when we match carpet selections to the areas of the home in which they will be placed,

Another way manufacturers create texture is by mixing varying carpet fiber lengths, materials, or cuts/loops to form textural patterns. Mixing different fibers into the same carpet may also achieve a more textured look. Variances in threads or fiber materials (thin, thick, different textured fibers, different color threads, etc.) can create textured appearances ranging from subtle to bold.

Finally, carpet manufacturers can use varying fiber colors or intentionally design patterns that provide a sense of texture without varying the texture of the carpet at all.

2. Matching Texture to Wear and Tear

Choosing the right carpet texture for the location is essential. You won’t want to install a smooth, velvet-textured carpet in a space that gets lots of foot traffic, especially if that foot traffic involves kids and pets.

In that case, we’ll steer you towards carpets with more resilient textures or patterns that do a better job of hiding crumbs, outdoor debris, the occasional muddy print, or minor stains before you have a chance to clean them up.

3. Personalizing Texture For Lifestyle

We discussed this a bit above, but your lifestyle is a major factor in selecting any flooring material, especially carpet.

The type of texture best suited to your lifestyle depends on things like:

  • Whether you spend more time indoors than outdoors
  • Spaces adjacent to pool or hot tub access
  • The ages of your kids
  • Pets
  • The activities that take place in the home
  • Whether you plan to rent or sell the home in the near future

Even seemingly small things like, “We normally eat lunch in the family room,” or, “We have a formal living room with minimal kid/pet access outside of special occasions,” impact what carpet styles we recommend.

Another thing to consider is that carpet texture can affect how you travel across a floor. Highly textured carpets or thick shag are a challenge for wheelchairs, walkers, and canes. So, if you use mobility aids, plan to age-in-place, or have parents/in-laws who live with you or visit often, we’ll want to know that so we can help you select carpeting or other flooring options more suited to ease mobility.
