Choosing Kitchen Tile? Head On Over To Creative Floors
Our design team works closely with clients so that we have a sense of their lifestyle, which goes a long way toward guiding them toward the best flooring choices for their kitchens – and beyond!
Whether you’re planning to replace outdated tiles or install tiles for the first time, an in-person consultation is the way to go.
- Visit Us at One of Our Showrooms
One option is to head to one of our local showrooms. We have 2 showrooms; one located in Orlando and one in Casselberry. There, you’ll have instant access to our design-savvy flooring experts, and a light and airy space to explore all of the kitchen tile options available. - Schedule an In-Person Visit
A more convenient alternative is scheduling a visit with us in the comfort of your home. In-home consultations and estimates have all the benefits of a showroom visit, including access to tile flooring samples and the ability to see how they’ll look with your existing fixtures and finishes.
If you’re planning a full kitchen remodel, we recommend bringing in any samples you have of cabinet doors, countertops, and paint swatches so we can look at them next to prospective tile flooring and backsplash samples.
We’ll Discuss the Pros & Cons of Various Options
Tile flooring is popular in Florida because it is one of the most waterproof options and can handle the indoor/outdoor lifestyle. Homeowners also appreciate that tiles are easy to clean and maintain, especially if they have pets or small children.
There are three categories of floor tiles:
- Ceramic
- Porcelain
- Natural stone
Each has its pros and cons – and this is essential information for homeowners to have before making their final decision.
Ceramic Tiles
Ceramic tiles are made in large batches (unless you’re going super custom) and fired at high temperatures. This makes for a strong tile option that is available in a wide range of colors and textures. They can also be made to mimic the patterns found in natural stone.
Ceramic tiles are typically the most affordable of the three options. They’re also popular for homeowners interested in using accent tiles to add visual interest.
Cons: Ceramic’s smooth surface is slippery, especially when wet. If you’re using ceramic tiles on your kitchen, bathroom, or laundry room floors, we recommend intentionally selecting textured tiles – preferably those considered “non-slip.”
Porcelain Tiles
Porcelain tiles are manufactured similarly to ceramic, but they’re fired at a hotter temperature, which makes them practically impervious. While most tile options are considered heavy-duty and are so durable, porcelain tiles are the most likely to be used in commercial applications because they can take a beating and look brand new.
Also, porcelain tiles can be made to accurately mimic stone and hardwood species, which is why porcelain planks are trending right now. They’re a win-win for homeowners who love the look of natural wood or stone but don’t want to worry about maintenance and upkeep.
Cons: If you love the look of tile but are on a budget, you’re more likely to choose ceramic, as porcelain has a higher price point.
Natural Stone
Natural stone tiles are the third option, although they’re not necessarily the best for kitchen floors. When it comes to flooring, homeowners usually consider marble, granite, travertine, or slate. These are definitely beautiful, but they are not usually considered ideal choices for kitchens.
Cons: Natural stone tiles are porous, making them more likely to stain, etch, or scratch over time. Also, because they’re cut from natural stone, they can inherently contain fissures prone to cracking in heavy traffic areas.
